I think I'm going to have to have the master cylinder and the power booster replaced on my 93 F-150. I'm getting a really hard petal, and barely any wear on the front pads and rear pads.
Is this something I can do myself with normal tools? Can I replace just the power booster? What's all involved?
Besides having to be a contorsionist or rubber-man to get at the bolts under the dash, it's not too bad. It's good to replace the master and booster as a unit, because one seems to go bad soon after the other anyways
Before you replace the vacuum assist check it out first. With the engine off pump the brakes until the pedal goes to the floor then press the pedal and start the engine. The pedal should fall when you do this then release the pedal and press again. If the pedal height is back to normal the booster is O.K. If not check to see if there is vacuum at the booster. If there isn't any or it is weak check all vacuum lines for leaks.
