Yes! in normal driving the tranny shift to 3º gear beffore converter can be locked, but if you are going up a hill with about 1400 pounds over the truck, it can go just in 2º gear and I need know if it locks the converter in this conddition.
A friend also told me: if you drive your truck in 2º gear using the Manual lever to put it on 2º it should lock up a few seconds after a cruise speed is reach at 2ooo RPM.
Does your truck have E4OD? can you test it and write back???
I have a 92 w/e4OD and my TC does lock up in 2nd. Also if I am driving real easy it will go directly to 3rd and lock up. As a matter of fact after it warms up I can't get it to wait to lock up in 3rd unless I'm on it real hard. But that's another story, Yes mine locks up in 2nd.
Original Ford ECM have a lockup ativation controlled also by tranny temp. if tranny is cold it doesn't activate converter to let the tranny got some heat. But if tranny or engine are getting real hot, controller try to activate converter as soon as possible to reduce heat produced at converter.
