Just checked my mileage on my 04 Supercab with the 5.4, only getting 10 mpg, was wondering what I should do. I know the sticker says I should be getting 15 in city and 19 on highway, HELP All the miles were in town but not alot of stopping and going.
It's 2 wheel drive with 3.55 ratio. Most of the driving is to and from work. About 10 miles round trip with a couple of stops. Never any mad driving just normal. With gas at 1.79 a gallon 10mpg sucks.
What's up.. Donnie
you might wanna take it to your stealer, and tell them you almost had a fender bender, because when you hit the gas your truck would not move .
for safety reason's alone they will give you a reflash and that will help
2004 Screw
You might want to review your driving habits. I have the V6 in mine and am getting about 19 mpg but I'm not a leadfoot. I have gotten in the low 20's and expect better as it gets broken in. I wouldn't think the V8 would consume THAT much more fuel.
I have a Supercab Lariat with 5.4 and 3.55 gears and have NEVER gotten less than 15 mpg. I have 5800 miles on it. I usually average just over 16 mpg back and forth to work, which is 17 miles each way, 80 pct highway. The only time I ever put a full tank of highway driving was when it was new and I got 18.3. No way your mileage should be that bad. I drive 70 on the freeway.
One problem, sounds like your driving only 5 miles, one way, I bet the engine never fully warms up, and it being winter, the gas is different. Take your baby on a little road trip, then check your highway miles.
The issue isn't driving habits. We have some F150's with problems. I'm semi-actively trying to figure it out. If I drive 100% highway at 65-70mph I get around 14mpg. I have a 2004 F150 SC FX4 18" tires with 3.73 Limited Slip. I usually get around 11-12. I am hoping a reflash will fix it but seems that a lot people see no difference. I feel its a mechanical problem. Maybe the rearend OR the front 4wd system. As a matter of fact, I must take mine in because my 4wd isn't working. Well, kinda, in 2wd the front hub is grinding like I am dragging a 10 ft pipe under the truck. Then in 4wd if I spin, bang, kicks out, bang, kicks in, then kicks out... I kinda feel its the rearend because mine gets hot-about 10 degrees from being too hot to touch during highway driving. I am going to get my clutches changed and have the bearings looked at. I have heard of people who HAD good fuel economy get sig. worse after rearend work. I have had a rental that got exactly what others are getting - 16 average high of 22 on 100% highway driving. So if anyone can help figure this out it would be greatly appreciated.
Jwyles , while by no means am i a automotive expert seems like u have answered most of your own questions if the front hub is grinding then its very possible u have a bad hub and if it is grinding then that = drag which means a reduction in mpg and if your rearend is getting that hot then that sounds like a friction problem also which also means drag and reduced mpg. with the problems you are having sounds like u need to get that truck to the dealer NOW and get ill and demand they fix it and give you a decent loaner . U bought a 25-30 k truck don't settle for a stinkin focus! lets us know what happens and your results when the finally resolve your issues
I agree with jwyles, its not driving style. I have a 2004 4x2 Screw, 5.4, 3.73 LS. I drive about 8 miles to work, normal random stop signs and traffic lights. Mostly about 35 mph until the last stretch at 40+. Engine rpms don't exceed 2000. My mileage is about 11-12 around town. I don't have much all freeway data. When I went to pick-up a new camper, I got 15 mpg on a tank of all freeway at 70-75. On the return trip pulling a 27ft, 4500lb trailer I got 8.5 mpg.
I also would like to know what the mileage solution is.
I have searched for TSB but I have found nothing. I took it back to the dealer but they didn't do anything, gave me a line about winter fuel and not checking the mileage until 10000 miles. My mileage hasn't changed at all since last August. I now have about 5500 miles on the truck.
There are a few people I know that the dealers told them to wait till there were more miles.. Is this a ploy to stall us till they figure it you or actually till they break in? I currently have around 9300 miles on mine.
Break in is a joke. I drive the same trip, same time of year, with the same load over the last 5 years of about 600 miles one way. My 03 F250 got the best mileage on the first trip, which was before the first oil change than the last trip which when I got home I had 23,000 miles.
My current ride, an 04 F150 HD got close to 16 mpg this summer (3200 miles)basically empty and around 14-15 (7500 miles)this fall pulling the quad on a trailer and the bed full of suitcases, and a small quad and 15-16 (10000 miles)this winter with a snowmobile on the back.
Come on, I have 9300 miles on mine--no where near broken in!!! She will just be broken in at 150,000 miles!!! Thats what a dealer told me once about a Honda...
