How do you remove jeep knurled wiper shafts. We have to get this thing inspected for insurance purposes and as of now it doesn't have wipers, wiper arms or a wipe motor on it. We can't figure out how to get the original Knurled shafts off to put new ones on.
We bought this to use until we can get the '69 EB ready for the woods. Don't want to put a lot of $$'s into it, but need wipers, working ones at that, for the inspection - no inspection - means no insurance - means no tags - means no playing in the forest.
BTW there is no set screw in the orig., no sleeve nut on the end and the replacements we got don't fit the orig. knruled shaft. I've searched the Jeep sites but to no avail..............
im no jeep guy, but most wiper arms/shafts like that have a tab underneath the wiper arm you press or squeeze to release the arm from the shaft......should be on the underside of the arm close to the shaft....if thats not the case i have no idea......hope this helps.........
there has to be some sort of clasp or catch if a puller couldnt do it, maybe a little roll pin or something......have you tried the jeep forum at pirate4x4.com?? they might have an answer........
PS...i just rememered, i once took a wiper arm off a car once that you had to have the arm bent out away from the window to remove it......probably not in this case, but an idea........

Never even though about Pirate - duh. I've tried about 10 other Jeep forums with no luck (searching only though). I'll try Pirate and maybe even post there.
okay try this , at the hinge point pull up on the wiper arm and hold up, then use a long tool(Big screwdiver with end taped)as fulcrom, where the shaft goes in,work the edge up alittle at a time . hope this helps. BTW these should be gm/chysler stlye wipers if i'm correct.
Hey Carlene,
I dont know jeeps that well, but you might have a nut holding it on, under a cover where the end goes on to the wiper shaft. Just a thought. I think it prys up to expose the nut some how. Good luck. Easy on the glass.
Kinda - except the front wiper shafts connect to linkage then protrude to the outside. The part that the wiper arm slides onto is the part in question. We've look for tabs, pins screws & whatever. The puller just rips the old one apart without budging it.
I don't know how many years it hasn't had wipers on it - the guy we bought it from just used RainX - RainX sure won't pass a vehicle inspection and won't do much in the mud either.
if you have access to a rotary zip tool, put a cutting blade on it and cut relief cuts in to the arm, maybe a 1/8 deep then you should be able to remove arm assembly without putting stress on the transmission , (thats what the arms are connected to).
I had a 78 jeep cj5 304 v8 for 20 years and I can tell you from experience that the arms get rusted on to the splines.
Try to squirt wd40 on it using a straw and then heat it with a propane torch.
There is a tab on them but their not very strong.
You may have an aftermaket wiper.
Prying up on them should release it.
The thing is after almost 30 years, you don't really know what is on the vehicle, especially a Jeep.
There should be a tab there, to help release the wiper. I have not done a CJ-7 for years, but, what works is taking a needle nose vise grip and pulling the locking tab right off the wiper arm. Then wedging a screw driver under the arm and forcing the tabs apart.
Then take a pair of locking curved vise grips, put it on the shaft very tight, then put your wiper arm puller on this. This will prevent you from pulling on the wiper transmission and wrecking it. It this does not work, then take a dremel and cut the thing apart as mentioned, what you do not want to do is strip the splines. I just did this on a Chevy, what a hassle. If you dismantle the wiper arm, you can spray PB Blaster in there.
As someone noted, you may have wiper arms like they put on semi tractors held on by a nut under the wiper arm body. Look for clips/tabs holding the body on and see if you can pry it off. Usually a 5/16 stud.
