I have an '86 4x4, 302, auto and according to the shifter I have OD. What trans do I have? I want to use this truck to pull a car trailer, will this trans be up to the task?
I'm going to say that this is a 3-speed with overdrive, and sure it can pull a trailer and be up to the task. Just keep it out of overdrive, overdrive is a lighter build gear, built for just cruising and isn't up to the task of pulling a trailer. Just put it in the gear that's below overdrive.
Should I be doing anything to this transmission before I start pulling with it? I am going to run an additional cooler, should I look into a shift kit for it as well? What about stall speeds, is the stock converter good enough? The motor in the truck should be in the 300-350hp range when it is finished.
definatly get a better aftermarket cooler, get an inline remote filter setup for it and a temp gauge so you can watch things. Transgo makes probably the best drop in shift kit available short of having the whole tranny built . the stall on the tc is fine dont mess with it. what motor is gonna be in that range? is it efi or carb.
The motor is a 351W soon to be efi. It is nearly done, just held up with choosing a cam (and a boat load of body work on the truck). Remember "302 efi onto ------>351w" So then you would recomend putting in a shift kit? I am still undecided on the necessity of the kit.
are you going with compcam 35-255-5. its the best setup for sdensity motor. I dont have a kit in mine an feel it does fine. but havent towed anything real heavy yet. i figure once it dies im gonna build it right ya know.
If you are towing I strongly suggest a shift kit. The kit makes for quicker shifts instead of the nice slow smooth stock shift. In towing apps it will help improve trans temps and less wear on the bands. I have one for my E4OD and tow a 4000 lbs boat regularly. Your going to need all the help you can with that amount of power
