You will probably only be able to afford a Flux welder. I dont know if there are any MIG's that cheap. However there is nothing wrong with a Flux welder, they seem to work just fine for me. I have used for many thing including auto body and buggy frames. Down the road you would probably want to upgrade to a MIG, they weld much thicker steal and also weld cleaner.
Go to cyberweld.com. Evry now and then, you can find factory reconditioned units there with a warranty and all for pretty cheap. I got a refurbed Hobart a/c d/c tig and stick unit made by Miller (from when Miller first started filling Hobart out with rebadged boxes) that would normally go for more than $1500 for $500 with a one year warranty.
I know the name strikes agony in the hearts of many but Harbor Freight has a line of decent welders. They are actually brand named from companies like Century and Hobart but with the HF name on the front. For small stuff and when you are young and starting out building your skills they are fine. As you get a better job and experience you can upgrade. Or, there is the classified ads of moving sales, and equipment liquidations you can try as well. I have had great luck from military base newspapers. I have developed a good relationship with a number of pawn shops that have given me good deals and stood behind the return if tools didn't work or work out. At your age, you can also farm yourself out to a welding shop and trade work and internship under a pro for a good welder or a good deal on a new or used one. It may be sweeping floors for three hours for an hour of chopping steel for a while but the experience and exposure to pro's at work will be invaluable. Be creative and the your actual cash outlay will go much further.

peace out,

from year of experince i can tell you that you wint be getting much for that price range. save the cash and get a better one. my first welder was a lincoln sp 175 plus. i got it new out the door for 700. and that is without the tank. trust me it will be worth it in the long run and once you get some time under your belt you will understand it better. the number one rule i have have learned is that you dont skimp on equipment.
I bought tha harbor freight one for 109.00, it works like a champ. I also bought the 2 year warrante (spelled wrong) for 20.00. Harbor freight here in Garland Texas is very lienent with their warantee too.
