well i finaly talked my dad into buyin a mig welder. we got the lincoln pro mig 135 wire welder. it should be good for what we need it for. he already has a arc and a gas welder so this will make it so we can fix up and build just about anything. not a bad welder. i cant wait to get it out this weekedn and try it out on my truck. i have a dozen things i can do already with it.

congrats, and enjoy your new toy. anything you want to weld on your truck, MUST be cleaned to bare metal, or the mig will do a lousy job... just a little hint

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Dec-02 AT 06:31 PM (EST)]the welder works pretty good. i got my wheel studs welded in so i can drive my truck again. the welds arent too pretty but they will do the job. not bad for mot welding anything in over 6 months. now i can make me a brush guard or or maybe even my 6 inch tube bumpers and winch mount. i still need a little prctice but im gettin better at it.

Ch**ys make a good welding practice scrap project. You just have to get past the thin skin of what they call a truck. Make good sand boxes, or flower pots. You know how things like to grow around rocks.
I also purchased a 135 Lincold Electric. IT is a blast. I am a rookie welder and getting practice before I tackle rust spots on the bed of my '64 F-100
Welder question. Local paper has a Miller Thunderbolt Crackerbox stick welder for $150.
I know Miller makes good stuff - is this a good price and this unit OK for my little garage projects?

I bought a used Miller Thunderbolt for $140, and it works great! Be sure to look at the condition of the cables and clamps. You can get a brand new Lincoln 225 at Home Depot for $223, so replacing just a few worn out parts puts you right there money wise. You want to make sure it works properly- about the only thing I know that kills 'em is someone changing the amperage setting while welding.
Those Thunderbolts are a good machine. Get all kinds of rod, actually. See if you can find some Lincoln Excalibur 7014 rod. Man, that stuff is great. But try everything, 6011, 6013, 7014, 7018. Altough 7018 turns into 7014 as soon as humidity hits it.
