I need help. I have a 1990 7.3 duelly f350. I have in the last 6 month replace a lifter pump and injector pump which needed to be replaced. We moved to a new house which is on a steep incline. I was have trouble starting it in the morning. It really seem like I was getting air in the system, it would hardly start. Then it would start fine the rest of the day. I had a thought last night to back in the drive way so that gravity would be working the gas forward. When I got in this morning I started right up in 3 seconds. Does anyone have an Idea on what to look at. Like I said the lift pump and injector pump have been changed recently.
You have air intrusion into the system, if the return lines and caps/orings are old they could be the problem if you have disturbed them lately. The other areas are numerous on the filter itself and the lines to the filter and from it to the IP.
Check out this site........look for filter leaks with pics.
This is exactly what happened to me. I have a '90 E350. It progressively got harder to start. I assumed it was the glow plug controller or something related to it. Today I took it to the mechanic and two hours later I was called and told the GP system is fine. I figured diesels only needed heat combustion and fuel and they'll run. Well - 2 out of 3 doesn't work. Mechanic said I have very low compression in 3 cylinders. FYI - mine also starts and runs fine once you get it running. It is just worn out. New engine is $7,700.
Now I'm hoping for a better deal. Hope yours is something else but don't be suprised.
I don't mean to hijack this thread, but does anybody have any idea what it should take to replace the engine in a van body (E350)? I understand it is a real bear!
I have an E350. I have not pulled my diesel but in others I pulled gas engines out. You have to take out everything in front of the engine. It is easier I think without the trans. The bolts are easier to get to on the trans. You need an engine crane with a short chain and room to move the van back or the crane forward once you hold the engine. Make sure the crane is strong enough to hold the weight at the distance you need. You also have to take off the air cleaner and fuel filter to get as much clearance as you can. Check the mounts while you have it out.
I am sure you can do much better on the price. I have seen a lot lower. Good luck with it.
It says 75,000. I was told when I bought it that it was 165,000. Since then I have had multiple mechanics tell me that it is more likely 275,000 or even 375,000. Guess I'll never really know!!!
