i have a 88 ford f250 non turbo 7.3l .For the last 2 mornings it started up as usual, but after about 4 or 5 seconds, it died. I knew it sounded like it ran out of fuel, but knowing i had a full tank, i loosened the fuel line at the injector and on the second cycle of cranking it over, it started right up. I tightened the line back up and it started good all day. But this morning it did the same thing. I thought there might be a leak in the suction side of the fuel pump , but i inspected it real good and didn,t find any problem. Cound it be i need a new fuel pump? thanks in advance
about a week ago i was putting a new glow plug in my truck and bumped and moved the cap on top of the injector a little. It was no big deal, it didn,t leak and the truck ran fine. But just a couple of days ago it started having this problem. I decided to change the line between the 2 back injectors because it looked old, after looking at it under a magnifying glass i noticed it had a bunch of tiny cracks all the way around the end. I put a new piece on it and this morning it started up and ran like it was supposed to do. You guys are right, it don;t have to be leaking to be sucking air. many thanks
Air molecules are way smaller than diesel molecules. It is not actually sucking air at the return lines, as they are on the pressure side, but with the motor not running the smallest air leak will let fuel bleed back, so that it wil usually start with what is in the inj pump, then hit an air pocket and die.
