I have a 2003 E350 w/26000 miles. The van has been pulling to the right for a while now and really wanders around where the pavement is rutted. The van REALLY pulls right when the brakes are applied, and when the roads are sloppy it will turn the steering wheel half way around if you aren't hanging on tight. The dealer replaced the rotors, pads, did a front end alignment and repacked the wheel bearings. It seemed better for a day but is back to its old wandering ways. My wife refuses to drive the thing and I don't really want to either. What else should they check for? Are these vans prone to this crappy steering or am I just one of the lucky ones? Could it be a bad caliper? If so which side? Is one dragging or is the other not braking as hard as the other?
Thanks.
If the problem is a caliper, you would probably have smelled the pads burning and the rotor would feel warm to the touch. If it pulls to the right, the problem could be a collapsed brake hose on the left.
This happened to me after Ford did my brakes, they bent the brake line. It was not pulling at all before they worked on it. First time I put the brakes on hard it pulled hard to the right. I took it back and they wanted to charge me for fixing it, put on new assembly and They paid for it.
If you have taken it back already, call Ford customer service and tell them about the problem, they may refer you to another dealer, I had luck getting the blend door replaced on the AC system after the warranty had run out by calling them. tree
Take the van to a GOOD alignement shop, it sounds like it's too neutral. What kind of tires are on it? Knobby all terrain tires? Aggressive LTs? Or regular passenger car tires? These vans really suffer with passenger car tires, you need LT rated or XL rated tires. Then get a GOOD alignment. If it doesn't drive right then take it back to the same shop. Factory specs are rarely good after 30k miles, even with the new ball joint setup.
I'll have the dealer check out the brake hose. I'm also going to take it to a real alignment shop especially since the dealer said they send them "out" if the problem persists. I'll just skip the middle man even though I'll have to pay for the alignment.
