i need help desludging my 460. its super nasty and i dont know what will remove the grime from the parts. i have removed the valve covers and oil pan. im just trying to clean it safely and i will install new bearings. any ideas?
Are you doing a complete rebuild? You could save yourself a lot of hassle by taking all the stuff to the machine shop and having them run it through the hot tank.
If it's just those two parts, I like to use Castrol Super Clean. It dissolves grease and sludge quite well. One word of caution, avoid contact with your hands. It's not exactly good for them. I would either go buy a parts cleaning tub at the auto parts store, or get some kind of big container that you can place the parts in to scrub 'em. The parts cleaning tub is nice because you can just turn on the motor and hose the cleaner over the part.
im running Auto-RX in mine to clean the rear main seal and the rings, i know theres no sludge because i removed the valve covers and intake manifold to replace gaskets.
do you have good oil pressure?
auto-rx is a slow natural cleaner, 1500miles cleaning phase
ill have pictures of my oil filters once i finish the cleaning.
i wouldnt do any solvent, quicky flushes
what do you consider "super nasty" , is the sludge scoopable?
As an "external" decarbonizer, Berrymans B-12 carb cleaner is hard to beat, it works better than any other parts cleaner that I've ever used.
In terms if cleaning things internally, I too would would recommend Auto-RX, (in fact, the 4.0L in my Ranger is currently in the rinse phase of an Auto-RX application).
the sludge is scoopable, i got most of it out with brake cleaner and a vacuum. im just cleaning it and putting in new bearings to tighten up the bottom end, not a complete rebuild. its still got good compression. the thing im worried about is the lifter gally. it also had plugged return holes. i think it will be alright though, its old and tuff as nails.
