My C6 Trans im 89 F150 4.9l 4x2 will not shift out of 1st unless I shift it mannualy. Could this be the Vacume modulator on the side of the trans or should I pull her out. Shortly after losing 3rd it would shift up to 2nd, now it stays in 1st......
pull the vacuum line off the modulator if tranny fluid flows out its shot for sure, i would replace it without even checking it tho its a cheap part, also check your kickdown linkage as this could probably cause it not to shift if it thinks your trying to pass all the time even tho i think it would shift if you let off the gas , replace the modulator first ......good luck
I just rebuilt a 351w connected to a C6. When I installed the engine the vacuum line at the top connection to the module was cracked. Replaced and shifting well again.
LAST EDITED ON 08-Sep-01 AT 11:08 PM (EST)[p]Vac. modulator will cause this, but the governor on the output shaft can cause this ,too. The gov controls flow through valve body inrelation to vehicle speed, has springs and pistons in it, and to those with moderate experience with C-6 trannys, this is not an uncommon problem, especially if trans filter has not been serviced. 2 ways to fix-1) remove tailshaft housing to get to governor and remove clean and reinstall or replace with new governor, or 2) this method requires quick reflexes and a strong stomach-drive vehicle up to about 40-50 MPH, move shift lever to park very quickly for 1 to 2 seconds, move shifter back to drive range. What happens when you do this is that when you put in park, the park pawl is right next to the governor, the violent vibrations encountered by the park pawl Buzzing by the teeth on the output shaft will usually dislodge any debris in the governor, and the gov housing being aluminum with steel pistons inside will sometimes get a ridge where the pistons ride. This violent buzzing when stuffed into park will often "remachine" the internal piston passages and alleviate a stuck governor. Good luck. My experience.
Same thing happened to my c6 in my 84 f150 and it turned out that a washer off of one of the governors had broken in half and made its way all the way through the tranny and ended up sitting in the fluid pan which meant I had to get it rebuilt. For your sake I hope it is just the Vacuum but best of luck.
