Does anyone know if the origional radio bezels are wide enough to be cut out and hold a cd deck? If not, what else have you done for a cd player install?
I've done 2 installs in these trucks a 67 and a 71, and I normally bend the two tabs back (towards the front) and make my bezel out of .050 aluminum The measurements are 9" X 4 3/8" for the plate. then attach it to the dash using 4 stainless #8 screws and self locking nuts on the back. Then bend the tabs on the mounting cage to suck it up tight to the aluminum plate. Put one of the strap things on the back to hold the back up (optional if you use .050, cause it's pretty sturdy). I have brushed one and polished one, both looked pretty nice. That measurement above is for a 71', cause its tight between ashtray and glovebox.
basically you'll be making your own bezel and mounting it over that factory recess and then just mounting the CD player to it. You still have to drill 4 holes in the dash though. To not touch the dash, I recomend going with one of those 2 knobbers with CD changer controls, and then put a changer in the glove box, or wherever you can find room. This would obviously be more friendly to the dash. I can probably send some pics of my install later this week (like sat or sun). .
I don't like messing with the dash since there is "no going back" I have found bezels on ebay at $5 -$15 dollars each. I put a CD in my 69 by bending back the tabs and cutting the two hole part out of the bezel off ebay. I did try making my own bezel years ago and was not real successful due to the wierd shape. After I cut up the bezel it made a real nice install.
I haven't done this to my truck yet (71 F100) , but i've done it to a few cars. You can mount a cd player under the dash, just fabricate a mount box with a metal brake in a |__| shape big enough to mount the box with sheet metal screws to the bottom of the dash. Then install your cd player. The vehicals i've done this to looked professional. Then seal off the old hole in the dash with cover that was used on the no radio option.

I firgured out a way too. I used a mounting bracket from a boat where I work and hacked it up 'til it fit behind the dash then mounted the radio and bent the tabs back. I screwed this to the tabs and seeing the orignal radio bezel was kinda broke already I trimed that and all the shows is the face of the cd player. Very happy with the out come and have radio again.
