I've read a few post about throttle body cleaning. I looks like I need to make sure to use throttle bottle cleaner (NOT carb cleaner) and to NOT touch the throttle cable itself.
However, I'm not sure exactly were the throttle body is on the 98 exp. 4.0 SOHC. Just looking around under the hood....I could not see that ominous yellow tag -- is it under that plastic center covering?
They are 4 screws in that top plastic cover, remove the cover you will see the throttle cable. To get to the throttle body you will have to remove the duct work from the throttle body, its held in place with a large hose clamp, loosen the clamp and the duct work come off. I cleaned mine with gumout carb cleaner, sprayed on a cloth and wiped the inside out. My problem was when the car sit the throttle would stick.
i just took the whole thing off, it is only 4 bolts and cleaned it off with carb cleaner. that coating that comes on it is just about worthless. there was lots of carbon on mine when i first removed it
Buy a Throttle Body cleaner. Gumout makes one so does Gunk. Reason not to use carb cleaner is because it can hurt catalytic converter.
Remove fresh air intake and engine cover to access throttle body.
Follow instructions on cleaner can, shoud state something like this: Start engine and manually open throttle with hand and spray throttle body cleaner to clean off gum. Engine will bog if you do not open throttle body to increase RPM. Do in bursts, no extended spray into throttle body.
You can remove throttle body, but this is easier and you are not messing with all the control cables, when you really do not have to.
