I drove my mother's '98 Explorer Sport home for her last night (she doesn't like driving in the dark), and about half way home the OD/OFF light in the lower right corner of the gauge cluster started blinking.
I was travelling down the highway at about 70 mph at the time. The transmission did not shift out of overdrive when the light came on. It would still shift in and out of it when the button was pushed, so the overdrive still seems to work properly.
It continued to blink until I parked the vehicle, and after restarting it to go home, it still blinked for another 10 minutes. It did eventually stop though. Again, overdrive seemed to shift in and out on demand at all times, it was just the light that was acting wonky.
Any thoughts/ideas as to what caused this? The vehicle is has the SOHC engine, 4WD and has about 120K miles on it. TIA
You should pull the codes to see if that reveals anything. Also, be aware that when the OD light is blinking you should notice that the transmission is shifting harder. This is intentional in that it goes into cripple/limp mode to enable the driver to get it to a repair facility. Needless to say, it's not good to drive it in this mode any significant distance. If pulling the codes doesn't reveal anything, then disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to reset the codes. If the light starts blinking again, seek more advice.
i have the same explorer with the same problem. Its been going on for about 2 years now, just comes and goes but everything works just fine. transmission shops want to pull the tranny so they can tell me what the problem is, i have pulled that battery and autozone cant tell me what the problem is by taking reading from the computer. maybe someone else that has had this problem can shed some light.
from reading other posts, changing the vehicle speed sensor was recommended, which is located on the rear axle, every now and then when i stop, i have a clunk from the rear end, so i'll change the sensor and let you know.
The clunk your getting from the rearend is the slip yolk on the drive line , I ended up buying the special grease from ford for this and putting it on mine and it went away .
i think ant synthetic grease would work fine.
as far as the trans code goes mine does the same thing every once in a while .
never figured it out .
