What can causes a pushrod to bend ? I had taken the engine out to replace the rear main seal, when I put the engine back in it made this loud knocking sound when accelerating. Today I took the valve covers off to check the valves and found one bend pushrod. Also i'm trying to identify the heads but don't see the ID on the sides of the head above the exhaust ports.
several things can cause it. to much lift, spring coil bind, a stuck lifter, or maybe it was just weak and needed to be replaced. did you torque your rockers correctly? check these things and see what you find.
I'm also confused about the timing, in the Haynes manual it says to set it at 14 but on the emissions tag under the hood it says 8 ???
Wich one should i do, i'm at 5500 feet above sealevel in CO
i would set at at the factory under the hood tag which is 8 degrees and then adjust for you altitude i wouldnt go to 14 that way to much in my opionin.
Well, I had replaced the bend pushrod but it still makes this knocking sound. What is the easiest way to check to see if all the valves are working right without taking off the heads wich I'm still try to identify cause there's no numbers on the sides above the exhaust ports.
take off your valve covers and push down on the rocker arms on the push rods ends then you can see which ones have play. you can tell usually which valves are working right.
My guess is you have a failed lift. I'm assume your engine is stock as far as internals go. If that is the case unless you put a new lifter in there you will just bend another one. You could even have a wriped lobe but I doubt that or maybe a sticky valve.
If the knocking sound is a sharp rapping sound then it is probably a rod bearing. If the sound is a deep thudding sound then it is probably a main bearing. If the sound is light tapping sound then it's probably a lifter.
One trick is to pull plug wires at the distributor one at a time with the engine running. If the knocking stops then you have found the cylinder that has the problem.
What all did you take apart to replace the main seal?
I agree with the wiped out lifter. I had a couple lifters fail on me in my old 460 and it bent the pushrods. Can't recall how good the cam was but I believe I just installed new lifters and push rods and went on my way.
I had lifted the engine out of the truck and sat it on the garage floor, then I kinda rolled it over supported on wooden blocks and took off the oil pan and the rear crank shaft bearing cap and loosened the other caps as described in the manual. When I put the engine back in it started making the knocking sound and oh yeah, it still leaks oil from the rear main seal
be careful pulling plug wires while the engine is running, I'd shy away from doing it while actually running the engine since being shocked that way. Ouch. Great procedure though.
