I just bought a 1985 F-250 with the 460ci engine. Its got 90k original miles on it and runs very strong. (stock 4bbl carb, Auto tranny)
my questions:
When its hot, its doesn't like to start... rolls over real slow, but starts. Any fix? Seems like backing the key off slowly as it rolls helps.
Check and clean all large wire connections. Make sure the battery is above 12 volts with the truck running. Swap batteries from another car. Buy a new starter.
Check the timing. If it is advanced too far the engine will have trouble starting wnen it is hot.
Could also be the starter, when they get older they dont like to work when they are hot.
Also wiring could be corroded internally, power to starter and/or ground wire.
I went through a similar proplem with mine. It's an '87 with 4-bbl and auto. After changing out the starter twice I started looking for other causes. Turns out the advance plate in the distibutor was corroded to the shaft and was stuck in the full advance position. I took it all apart and cleaned it up with emery cloth and lubed it with dielectic grase. Works great now. Good luck.
