The Duratec V6 is chain-driven. The 2.3L I4 may be chain-driven, I don't now, but the pre-'05 2.0L Zetec I4 definitely has a belt. Gates recommends replacing it at 120,000 miles. It's listed as a non-interference engine, so a broken belt shouldn't damage the engine.

The latest Gates timing belt catalog now lists the Escape Zetec I4 as an interference engine. The change interval is still listed as 120,000 miles.
I'm glad I read this before. The Ford dealership tried to tell me I needed to change my belt and I probably have a chain and not quite 120,000 miles yet. Thanks!
