I've got a 93 F250 2wd. how much rolling resistance should there be in the front wheels. If I spin them, they will spin 1/4- 1/2 rev. before stopping. Is this normal?
I would consider that to be a little more drag than normal, but that said, if your brakes do not get hot in normal driving, its not an issue.
It is normal to have a little drag and as the calipers age and are affected by dirt and rust, the pistons will not retract as easily and will stiffen up and eventualy freeze.
The more drag there is, the faster the brake pads will wear, it will also reduce your fuel economy.
Do you have grease leaking out of the bearings? This could indicate heat, the grease turning to liquid from heat. Try driving and then check if the caliper is getting hot. If so you may have a sticking problem. If not you should be good to go.
About the only thing I've found that helps is to remove the calipers once a year, clean the slides (both the slides and the caliper) with a wire wheel, and coat them with anti-sieze. Fords have allways had a problem here. If you don't keep the slides functioning properly, eventually they bind. Causing the inside pad to wear faster than the outside. Suddenly you hear metal/metal and say to yourself, "It cant be the pads, I just changed them last month"
dito, also they make special caliper grease that is supposed to last a little longer than anti-seize. Sounds like yous are dragging more than they should, I would recomend doing the above.
