Moebdick,
I think your right about the temp thing and the elevated idle. I believe its around 30-32 degrees f that it kick up to around 1000-1200 rpms.
Im down here in south florida and it was in the low 70;s and my truck idled up and then down when i hit the brake or gas. it doesnt idle up to 1000-1200 im talking like up to 850. then when i touch the brake it drops to normal around 600-650..
I am starting to wonder if they just disconnected the battery when doing the transmission work and the engine just needs to be driven to "reset". Funny thing is all the presets on the radio are still there. What's the deal with the two batteries? are they in parallel? Or Does one do a portion of the truck (starter, engine control, glow plug, etc..) and the other due the other stuff (lights, radio, etc...)? I guess I need to find and electrical print. Besides the engine not doing the high idle when it park, it's also very quiet upon cold start up. (it's not doing the typical diesel clatter) like it did before. Just some things I noticed after the trans service.
I've got a potential "flash" question. My 04 used to "idle up" while in park after approx 30 sec. Upon pressing the brake pedal it would idle back down. The manual indicates this is normal as the higher idle is required to properly lubricate the upper end of the motor. Fair enough.
I just took my truck in for the 04B24 tranny update and now I notice it doesn't do the high idle thing anymore. I've also noticed a little less "umph" on take off (seat of the pants feel nothing scientific). The turbo spool up seems to require a little more gas pedal than before. It does idle and cruise smooth and the shifts are right on.
Have I been "flashed"?
The service manager didn't mention it and the paperwork doesn't indicate it (unless it's one of these service codes without description.
Thoughts?
The idle up is dependent on temperature. It will do that if the temp is below a certain temp point. Otherwise it shouldn't do it.
When flashed, they usually make an entry in the invoice.
Call the dealership and talk with the diesel tech.
The batteries are both used to start the truck. The compression on the truck is that in needing the extra push from the two batteries. PLUS thats another reason they say to not drive you truck to short a distance to much because it doesnt give the truck enough time to recharge the batteries... the driver side is the primary and the passenger side is the seconday and yes both are used. also if the batteries die you have to replace BOTH if you only replace one the bad one with drain the good one so that they equalize....hope that helps
and for the big draw the glow plugs have in the cold weather.
See the ....Tech Folder...... in the first "Read this first" threads. There is a link on disconnecting batteries and the relearning needed for the engine and the trans.
Took my '03 into the dealer for it's oil change. It had been idling up and down during it's warmups this winter. Told the service manager about it and he said he'd have it reflashed. The current sticker says it is a 3C3A-12A 650-BDL. My gas mileage has dropped some but it may be me, because I have yet to go through two tanks of fuel yet. Does anybody know what date release this flash is? What should the newest flash code numbers be for a March 2003 built date truck.
I am interested in this flash. I am getting max 14mpg. I called the dealer and asked them if there was a flash for my truck, and the service tech acted like they just don't flash because the customer wants one. My truck is an 04/04 and I don't believe it has been flashed since12/04 when I bought it.
Is there a code word or secret handshake I need to give a dealer to get this flash? Is there a more flash friendly dealer in Salt Lake/Layton Utah area than the one in Bountiful?
azford250, yes as a matter of fact got the truck back when the service dept. closed the night before I left. It did make a difference, averaged above 15 mpg. pulling my trailer. Around 3000 lbs is all but running in to quite a breeze down and back sometimes probably 20 to 30 mph gusts. I was happy with it - never kicked out of overdrive up and down grades running 70 , maybe someone knows calculation on head winds but I think I could've pulled a low profile 10k load easier.
