the only thing I have heard is that the 7.3 could have been made to meet EPA standards. Have no idea if that was true. I hope they go back to the 7.3. I had to buy a used 02 to avoid the 6.0. We had too many problems with 6.0. I am not hearing any issues with 05's but not one driver has one. They are buying Dodges now. Too many (5 for 5) 03's and 04's with problems. There is about 40 commerical drivers involved. I hope its true or the 6.0 and trans are really fixed in 05.

I drive a 6.0 2004 E350 everyday at work, at first I was very impressed with the performance. We have two and have had no problems yet with them at 30K mi. I liked it so much I went out and bought a used F350 4X4 1996 with the 7.3 it has the 5 speed as opposed to the 05 w/ auto trans. The 6.0 is lazy compared to the 7.3 in my opinion the 6.0 only gets 14 mpg and my 7.3 gets 19 around town and I just got back from the Outer Banks and averaged 21 even running 80+ through the mountains. I see the adds about the cummins and the duramax and never had the chance to compare them wiht the powerstroke. I hear they have problems with tranny's in the cummins and cylinder liners in the duramax, if you ask me horsepower and torque mean nothing when its always in the service bay. Ford has a reputation for sticking with engines and working the bugs out of them, most turn out to be very dependable but then again I have always owned a blue oval and they ALWAYS get me home!

My uncle has a 2004 6.0 and pulls trailers all over the country at least 5 days a week and has well over 100000K on it. Maybe even over 200K on it by now. He said he hasnt had any problems with it at all. When he was here last time he did tell me it costs him about 38cents a mile to maintain the truck. That includes fuel, insurance, maintenance, etc etc.. His insurance is much higher than mine cause he must carry 1milion in liability. I figured it about 25-30cents a mile to run my F250. Cheaper to take a bus...

I averaged 21 mpg, I live in SW PA and only 1/3 of the trip required going thru the mountains on I-68 and I-70. The milage really improved when the ground flattened out. 52 total gallons used 1022 mi. round trip.

1996 F350 4X4 126K, bought it 6 mos. ago. It is all stock except for a K&N air filter assembly that I purchased on eBay, prior to the trip I serviced it changed the oil replaced the fuel filter and installed a tonneau cover. The truck has a manual 5 speed and I was in overdrive almost all of the time. The van that I drive at work (2004 E350 6.0 auto) only averages 14 mpg. but I tend to leadfoot it, I have noticed that it will not run the hills in overdrive like mine will it's constantly up-shifting.

When I divide 1022 by 52, I get 19.6mpg, unless you've got another formula for calculating fuel mileage.

My dads '02 f250 XLT 7.3PSD 6-speed 4x4 ex. cab, shortbox, has gotten 21 before on trips. He averages around 17-19mpg all the time. 15-16mpg when he lets me drive it and I turn up the chip

I wish they'd bring back the 7.3, it's a beast. I know of several people who had to buy used Super Duty's just to get the 7.3 because they don't want problems with 6.0.

Unhappy

I have five f350 99s, with 7.3s, all 4r100 autos, 4x4s. one dumped the tranny at around 30k in 2000. other than that no problems. we use em to transport horses and feed all over nor cal and nor NV about 10k lbs average(sometimes 14k). lots of desert and off road use. i got a 04 new and it was a piece off cr*p. thing had a mind of its own and would accelerate with out even touchin the throtle. ford couldnt figure it out and we ended up with a data logger(black box) from ford so they could record the events. they ended up replacin the ECU. then the tranny started shiftin REAL hard. ford blamed thier ECU and replaced it again. then the rear seal on the motor started to leak when cold. (20 degrees). we finally sold it and i am about to reluctantly look at dodge. several of my friends have also had issues with thier 6.0s and went to dodges and they are happy so far. i dont think ford will go back to the 7.3. they and navistar have invested to much money to junk it. maybe in a few more years they iron the probs out. i just cant wait that long. the 99s are gonna wear out real soon.
