A truely "NEW" Carter YF is practically impossible to obtain. I bid on one on ebay once, went for over $130. I was stupid for not buying it for more.
There are lots of idiots trying to sell "new" Carters on ebay, but all of those I have ever seen, except one, were remanufactured ones. Of course, that might be just fine for you. I am running a remaned one on my 240 and am quite pleased. The remaned units can be had on ebay for under $50 usually and often much less than that. Or, you can pick up a Carter YF for a 1969 F100 with 240 from most of the various parts places for around $120. They will be remanufactured of course -- but they often come with warranty as well, so you can take back several units till you get one that seems to have been correctly worked over.
You can get a late 60's YF at AutoZone for less than $100. I have one thats been sitting on my shelf for a couple of months waiting for a breather find. I am going to replace what was a very tempermental Autolite 1100. As soon as I get the replacement the POS Autolite starts working fine. I still think it will cause problems with hot starts when warm weather comes back. Carter, here I come!!
I hope these Carters give the better mileage and a bit more power like I have heard.
I dont know how compatable they are with a 223 as far as being a bolt on replacement...
