can anyone explain where the ballast resistor is and what it looks like, even better if someone could take a digital pic.... there are 2 possible locations on the firewall... one is 1/2by 2 inch hexagon shaped, and the other is 3/4 inch round/oblong shaped.. is it one of these?? I dont want to unravel all the wiring to locate which is which if someone else knows.......Thanks
first, what year truck? On my 64 it is a pink wire about 10" long, under the dash by ignition switch. the easiest way is follow the wire from your dizzy and it should lead you to it. installing a pertronix and flame thrower coil, you can eliminate it all together.
If the 1/2 by 2 " is made of ceramic and has a spade end on each side than that should be it. You can unhook it and see if runs. It should be hooked to the plus side of the coil.
If you use a resistor be sure it doesn't come in contact with any wires except those on its terminals. It gets HOT.
You can eliminate it with just a Flamethrower coil even without the Pertronix, although the Pertronix is worth the investment. There are other coils than the Flamethrower that also have their own internal resistance, allowing elimination of the resistor.
There is a downside to a coil that eliminates the resistor. If you accidentally leave your car ignition on, an oil filled coil like a flamethrower will drain all its oilly contents on your floor, destroying itself. If you do that with a Pertronix installed it will also self destruct. I had both situations happen.

Just go to any local parts store and by a white porcelain white ballast resistor and mount it between the coil minus side and ignition side and drill a small hole in your firewall and screw it on, and hook up one prmary wire to the coil side, and other end to the ignition side, simlple as that.
Hey Janet,
Is it better to just leave the resister in line with the new pertronix coil...or do you have to remove it for proper operation?
Which way will give most gains in energy...which was will cause most system dammage?
I've got a Pertronics flamethrower ( 3 ohm ) to install and was planning on taking the resister off. Also still running a single point dist.
