My 302 in my 85 f-250 4x4 is just to weak. I think its time to graduate to a 460. What i,m wondering is what year 460 should i look for for this project. Also what differences ,if any, is there between a 460 from a truck vs. a car. What obstacles should I expect to encounter during this project. I should mention that the truck came factory with the 6.9.
You have a lot of work ahead of you. I just about have the bugs out of my 351W to 460 swap. If it is a manual you will need a different bellhousing and flywheel. If it is an automatic you will need a different tranny since you can not change the bellhousings. 302, 300-6, and 351W have the same bellhousing pattern. You will need to find a factory oil filter relocator or by an aftermarket one($300 from L&L). I had to replace the mounts on the frame, one side is riveted, I bought both through the dealer. This is about all I can think of at the moment.
Good luck,

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Dec-01 AT 00:26 AM (EST)]I guess i should have mentioned that the truck came original with the 6.9 diesel. when it threw a rod I replaced it with the 302. I also had to change the frame mounts to acommadate the small block. then I had to cut a hole in the cross member for the oil filter on the 302. I do still have the 6.9 bellhousing, are they the same as the 460? I also still have the big block frame mounts, so that part is covered.
I believe that the 460 and the 6.9 require different bellhousings and also different frame mounts. Could be wrong, but that is my understanding. Also, I know that the newer trucks have a different radiator for the 460 than for the powerstroke.
I,m pretty sure the rear end is a ford 10.25. the tag says 3:55 open diff. As for the radiator, i still have the 6.9 radiator in it hooked up to the 302. i was a little concerned about it running to cool at first, but the temp guage stays 170 to 180.
Do you have your heart set on a 460? I agree, when I had the original 302 in my f150, it's just too small. I always had to use low range on the transfer case to do any serious pulling. Why I made the first statement is, I installed a 351w and am much happier with it. And it is a much easier swap as everything bolts up. You just have to change the oil pan and the exhaust y-pipe plus a couple of minor little things.
I thought about a 351W but wasn't sure it would have that much more torque than the 302. never owned a truck with a windsor before. What kind of difference is there in the ratings of the two.
I have got to agree with franklin2 on this. You should consider a 351W or a stroker based on the 351W. It would enable you to keep your current tranny/bellhousing, engine mounts, and possibly even your accessories. A 393 should put out an easy 400 ft/lb torque. You need to do some research to see which would be the most economical for your particular situation. But if you do have your heart set on a 460, by all means go for it!!!
