Hello, I have a 1977 Bronco that I have been completely going through the drive train on. I had the transmission rebuilt along with the transfer case and I am curious as to what type of lube goes into the tranfer case. The original truck manual says: Above 10 degrees F -- SAE-50 and Below 10 degrees F -- SAE-30. I've talked to two guys and was told to use a motor oil. I just kinda looked at them funny ... The fluid that came out of it smelt like rear end fluid or gear lube. I figured I would ask on here since there are alot more inteligent people on here then at my local parts store. If someone could help me in my cituation it would be greatly appreciated.
The transfer case uses 80w-90 gear oil. Ford recommended 50 wt in some transmissions for easier shifting in cold climates. But I've always used regular gear oil and haven't had a problem down to -20*F.

Though i'm not doubting Rcrawlers knowledge.
I read in my ford manuel for my 1977 bronco that you use 10w 30 and or 5w30 motor oil why is this and i would have thought that for would recommend gear oil 80w 90
Right know iam using 10w 30 syn motor oil
Should i change it to a synthetic gear oil instead.
Yes, that is what they recommend. 30w for cold climates and 50w for warm climates. The cutoff is 10*F average. I have found that the 30w is too thin for most applications unless you are changing fluids every 6 months when the weather changes. FWIW, there is a difference between 30w- 50w engine oil and transmission oil. If you want to run synthetic, I would recommend Unocal 76 Syn Lube CD-50. We run it in some of our log trucks with a drain interval of 500,000 miles. Very good quality but a little expensive.
