I'm the recent new owner of a 2000 EB. I bought the truck primarilly because I will be moving my fam to AK this spring and wanted more room and comfort for the drive.
I recently made a purchase that I'm hopeing will yield me 4-5 MPG overall. I dont even have the truck yet and I bought a GEN II K&N FIPK and a Flowmaster Force II Cat Back. All my parts are on my porch and I'm picking up the truck tommorow night. Whats the best estimate of MPG you think I'll see with these 2 mods if any? I'm not concerned with boatloads of power even though it has the 5.4 my main goal is to get the best milage I can. Has anyone gotten more than 16-17 MPG with a 5.4 4x4 EB?
The exhaust will help more than the K&N. the K&N will be better when clean, but if you live in a dust environment you'll have to clean it almost weekly, so you may be better off with a paper filter. I know we got a 2 to 3mpg gain in my '92 E150 with a better exhaust. We used 2.25 pipe right off the converter, and made it exit right in front of the pass. side tire, no muffler. It sounds like a stock car, runs like a raped ape, and get 17mpg at 70mph.

I have a K&N filter in an "open air box" setup. I also have a custom Flowmaster system with a SIDO setup. I also installed a Hypertech chip. My Ex is a 97 with 170,000 on the clock and on my yearly trips from NC to MA I get between 19-21 MPG. This mileage changes depending on where I am in the trip. I go straight through the mountains and usually average 17-18 there. Once out of the mountains I get a consistant 20-21 MPG at 70 MPH. The key to these 5.4's is to keep the RPM's below 2300. You will get great fuel economy if you do this. I have also found that if I drive without cruise control I get better mileage. I can give it just enough pedal to maintain speed without downshifting the trans. I hope this helps!
