97 5.4 4x4. While driving to work this morning I encountered a problem that I haven't seen or heard of before. This might be for all you Ford techs to figure out. I went to pass a tractor trailer and when I romped the accelerator pedal the truck just coughed and wouldn't go! It idled fine but wouldn't accept any fuel. I pulled off to the side of the road and gave it gas again. Still no go... it just shook like it was running on 2 cylinders. I shut it off and restarted it and all was fine in the world! Keep in mind that this truck doesn't cough or sputter at all... it is chipped and it has a Flowmaster exhaust and K&N. If you romp on the gas it's gonna either get traction and go or smoke the tires. I'm a little stumped. I had another problem about a month ago similar but different. I was pulling out of my subdivision and the truck completely died! It would not restart at all! I removed the key and reinserted it and it started right up! I figured that was a PATS deal and it hasn't happened again. I am totally confused, any help would be appreciated. Oh by the way.... there was no CEL thrown so I can't even go that route.... that would be too easy.
I had a similar problem last summer, it idled fine but would hesitate on acceleration and no CEL. After about a week of this the CEL finally came on and it turned out to be a bad O2 sensor. I changed the two frount sensors and it runs great now. BTW my 97 4x4 EB has about 135K miles on it.

Already changed the 02 sensors last year. O2 sensors will not give a miss condition. It will just change you emissions output. This is definately not a miss problem. This is a no gas being taken at all problem. It idles great and runs fine now but I just don't want the thing to quit on me whil I'm runnig down the road 500 miles from home. If I had a general idea of what is causing this I will just fix it and be done with it. Mine has 170,000+ on the clock now and still runs great! THis problem has me a little stumped!
Fuel filter is only a few months old. Checked MAF already.... it looked a little dirty but not bad enough to cause this kind of problem. Honestly, It felt like it was running on 2 cylinders. The crazy thing is that when I restarted the truck it ran perfectly!
I doubt it. THe truck had been sitting for over a week. The temperature was all over the place... warm one day and cold the next. I am guessing that I sucked some water out of the tank. It only had a quarter of a tank in it when it happened. I stopped that day and dumped in a bottle of Lucas Fuel treatment anf then filled it with Ammoco Ultimate. No more problems since then. It never threw a code and it runs like normal now. I have tried to replicate the problem over and over but the only thing I got was a bunch of rubber smoke!
I had a similar problem after I installed a chip. the truck was acting really weird on several occasions. A few times, it would just shut completely off and while coasting to a stop, it would start back up again. removed the chip and cleaned the connections again real good, worked great after that.

Chip has been installed over a yr now. It won't do it again or at least I can't make it do it. I have romped on the gas, slid it sideways around corners, slammed on the brakes and then hit the gas..... nothing but perfection! I;m just chocking it up to condensation in the fuel tank!
