If you can't find it on your door jamb, then you're gonna have to pull the pcm - there is a sticker on it just like the one that should be on the door. That's what I had to do when I went to get my chip - my sticker on the door jamb was all faded.

It's not on the data tag. It a seperate little sticker on the "A" pillar between the door hinges. It's about a 1"x2" paper sticker. If it's gone you will have to pull the PCM to see that sticker.

It's a moot point, though. It doesn't matter what your box code is, the chip will overwrite the programming in the PCM, and you can select any code you want for your chip.
For example, my box code in my PCM is TEE5, which I don't like. Both of my chips are based on TDE0, so I've got all the benefits of the updated program, and it didn't matter what my PCM was to start with.

I'm looking to buy a used chip so will I have to have it reburned to match my ecu code?

Possibly. The early single bank chips are written to a specific code, so it would have to be reburned to match your code. The newer four bank chips are supposed to overwrite all the PCM programming so that they will work in any PCM, and for the most part they will, but it seems that not all the PCM code families are entirely compatible.

Most any chip you select can be reprogrammed, and the programmer will be able to tell you which codes work best with any other.

so if i'm listening to you right...if I were to buy a newer used chip with someone elses code still on it and I plugged the chip into mine it would override the stock ecu and pick the best one for my truck even if it was used before??

thanks

It wouldn't pick the best one, it would use the one that is already on the chip. Say for example your stock code is XLE8 and the chip you bought was programmed as an XPC4, when you installed the chip your PCM becomes an XPC4 until the chip is removed.
