I am currently trying to replace my stock wheel studs with longer ones for my new rims. Right now im trying to take off what i think is the "wheel bearing adjusting nut" as its shown in my haynes manual for my '78 f150 4x4 (external locking hubs). I have the socket that is needed but im having some problems. I cant seem to get the nut off. The main problem is that it isnt like the normal nuts, this one is different and the socket will easily come off of it. This has led to scraped knuckles and profanity. I have managed to be able to hold my breaker bar in place and i got a couple of good tries at getting it off before the socket slipped off, the nut is pretty tight. If anyone knows what i mean id appreciate any advice.
................Those tabs hold and prevent the nut from coming lose . Take a long , skinny punch , cleanout the grease so you can see the tabs and flatten them out to unscrew the nut . sk...
i just rebuild the hubs a few days ago and there was a lock washer that had holes in it. the bearing nut has a pin that is held by the lock washer so it doesn't come off on you.
On my 94 F250 4x4, I had to use an impact wrench. The regular breaker bar had no effect and I am not a 98 pound weakling either. I spent a week farting around with this problem til I bought an impact wrench which took 10 seconds to do the job.
Also not that the left and right may have opposite threads. If I recall correctly, my truck had left hand trheads on left wheel and right hand on right. Check manuals etc to be sure but this might be part of the problem, cause an impact wrench don't care if you go the wrong way.
