Tire Pressures -What does everyone use?
Tire Pressures -What does everyone use?
In some of the other posting were discussions about keeping the optimal tire pressure for better fuel economy. What is the reccomended tire pressure on the Expedition?
What is everyone using and what kind of experiences, good or bad do you have with pressures that may be slighlty higher than reccomended?
Reason I mention higher than normal - part off the Explorer tire fiasco was that Ford delibeberately set the rec pressure too low, supposedly to give the vehicle a lower center of gravity, and of course that backfired on them bigtime.

Mich are excellent tires, have had same model on every vehicle I have had, and swear by the ride and reduced noise.

Pay No Attention
Pay little attention to what it says on the tire. Go with the info on the door sticker. (on my Expedition its 35/30) While it is true that Ford screwed up and recommended pressures that were too low, years of lawsuits have forced them to be more responsible. I had to cover the Ford/Firestone/Explorer story a few years ago, and after a dozen interviews with tire designers, truck designers and safety officials, it is clear to me that tire sidewall information is confusing and has mislead many people.
I personally think you can play with the pressure a little....maybe a pound or so either way...but as long as we are talking normal loads then the normal Ford recommended pressures on the door sticker are really pretty accurate.
One well accepted conclusion to the Firestone/Ford fiasco: Ford lowered the recomended pressures because that helps lower the rollover potential. But lower pressures run at higher temperatures...higher temperatures caused the Firestones to come apart...which caused the trucks to rollover anyway.

I run 35 in all four. I tow a center console fishing boat during the spring, summer, and early fall & found the extra 5psi in the rear helps my Expy feel more stable than it did with only 30 in the rears. I have the 17" Goodyear Wrangler RT/S's.
I just put a set of revo's
on my expo. when I asked the guy at costco what the pressure should be he could not even find a recommendation on them. the side wall says the max is 60lbs, costco put them at 35lbs, that gave me alot of body roll on curves and a mushy ride. I put them at 45 rear and 40 front. This is a very smooth and stable ride for me . I believe the originals were 255, but I put on 285/75/16. these fill up the wheel well much better

With all the problems I'm having, if Ford says 35 at all corners, I've got 35 at all corners.

My 04 XLT 2 wheel drive says 35 all the way around that what I use. The Conti tires say max psi of 44, that would only be if I was towing a Travel Trailer. or something similar. This is a Truck(supposedly) not a Towne Car 35# does not seem to be too harsh or noisy. It seems to ride and handle fine

I was tought that the specified tire is rated to carry a specified weight with a specified pressure stated as per the tire manufacture on the side of there tires, there is also (LT) which is light truck and (P) which is passenger, LT is built heavier that P, therefore the pressure is usually higher on LT than P because of the higher loads that can be applied. My tires are LT's and I run 44 psi in all four corners, '97 Exp. Broken Wire
I go almost by the door sticker (35 rear/30 front), except I run 32 in the fronts. I've been thinking about running increased pressure (like broken wire's 44 on all corners), just to see if it handles better.
