I have a 1987 6.9 with 147k miles and found oil in the water i have read the other posts and am still not clear on how to tell if its the cooler or a head
gasket it does not smoke hardley at all runs perfect. If it is the cooler where do you get parts for it. did pressure test on radiater and it held 16lbs all night.
thanks for any help.
I'm sorry to inform you, but @147K your prolly in need of both, H gaskets and O-Rings.
I have no clue as to the maintainence your truck has seen, but allmost all 6.9's need this service @ around 100K miles. The O cooler is easy to do when the head is off. If the head is on, it's a bit more involved.
The Oil Cooler has one large tube and a header on each end. headers connect the tube to the block. The tube has two sets of smaller tubes inside. One set of tubes allows oil to pass thru, the other set allows coolant to flow. It works like a heat exchanger. Well, there are 2 O-Rings on each header. One seals the oil passage, the other seals the coolant passage.
