I just bought a 99 ranger XLT with the premium sound system. CD, Cassette, AMFM radio/stereo. The CD does not work. I think i can see a CD deep inside of the thing. When I press eject there is a message No OJ then No CD. I knew it did not work when I bought the truck and the owner said that it just quit. Any thoughts? I figure it will be cheaper to replace the whole unit than get this one repaired. I am hoping that it just has a home made CD inside and the unit will not recognize it.
Well, if your ambitious, you can try pulling it apart and manually working the mechanism. Some CD players have a little hole next to the loading area that you can put a object into to manually push the eject mechanism, but I haven't seen that a whole lot in the audio world - more of a PC CD ROM thing. If you're prepared to replace it anyway, you don't have anything to lose by trying to fix it. I typically won't spend money to repair a factory radio - I'd replace it with another factory unit from a junk yard or something, or better yet, an after-market unit.
Sometimes a cd will get stuck inside the player, yet the player doesnt reckognize that the cd is there, so it wont eject. I can usually get a cd out by inserting another cd partially, just until the unit tries to grab the disk, then pulling it back out. The unit then usually reckognizes a disk and you can eject it. Aside from that, removing the unit and taking it apart are your only other option. And like you said, even if you get the disk out, the player might be bad. Good luck!
