I'm new to the forum and glad that I found it. I just finished swapping the 300 I6 in my 86 F150 for a 351W HO 4 barrel from an 85 F150. So far, its great. My question concerns axles. The rear axle in my 86 is a code 18, and the rear axle in the 85 is a code 14. What are the ratios of each and which is more suited to daily driving? Both trucks have a C6 tranny (code K).Thanks for the help.
Code 18 is a 3.08 ; Code 14 is 3.00 . Of the two Id opt for the 3.08 , Its still geared kinda high but it will deliver decent mileage & still give you Ok hauling & towing ability .
The axle code is located on the VIN/ info label on the drivers side door jamb, at least it is on my 86 and the 85 I got my motor from. Thanks for the information, BTW.
check out the little metal badge on the rear end housing, all of your questions will be anwered there, gear ratio, and weather or not it is posi, limitted slip, or just a regular rear end.
