Cool '99: Problem with Starter or Solenoid???

Hi there,

New member here. A little frustrated today. My '99 F350 v10 started slow a couple of times this week so I went to Sears this morning to pick up some jumper cables to carry with me just in case. They were out of stock and, when I left the store, my truck wouldn't start (of course). It made a "click" and the dash lit up but felt like it didn't have enough juice to crank it over at all. From the slow starts this week I assumed that the battery might be completely dead at this point (116k miles, bought it two years ago from a lot so they put a "new" cheap battery in it). I went a picked up a new battery, put it in, and it still did nothing but the "click". So, I took a foot-long socket extension and a hammer and hit the starter while someone tried to crank it over... nothing. Tried connecting some of the leads with a screwdriver on the solenoid... nothing.

I haven't used a meter to check for power at the start yet because I ran out of time.

I'm thinking that it's either the start itself or the solenoid.

Anyone know for sure what it might be? Thanks!

Matt

first off never ever hit that starter with any thing. the case has perm. magnets in it my own fords i have found the wire between the solinode and starter goes bad and you get poor voltage down to it. with your milage its time for a rebuild to play safe. just take a very carefull look at the wire esp. the clip to the starter sol. and few inches up the wire. just something i have found and my bother who rebuilds them knows about.

Thanks Charlie. I didn't see anything that looked bad when checking out the wires but I'll look at them a bit closer now that it's light out.

Anyone else???

Thanks!

Matt

If it was starting slower the last couple of days it's probably the starter and not the selonoid. I have had that experience with my gass getter car before. Started slow a couple of times and then nothing. Good luck

just make sure you have 0 corrosion on your bat terminals and check that wire as it may look good buts not esp under the crimps. with the miles you stated i would play safe and get it rebuilt.
fords have long been prone to corrosion problems. what i do is replace the positive bat wire when its the short one pos to starter relay and make a new relay to sol. wire and solder the crimp ons so that they hold tight . just some thing that works for me.
my bother when he rebuilds them gives the people a new crimp on end for the starter and it almost stoped returns . good luck i hope the repair is dirt cheap.
