Hi all,
I'm telling you, its one problem after another with this truck.
I was on the highway today and decided to "give it a little gas". I had the accelerator on the floor for about 2 seconds, when the "check engine" light came on. So I pulled over, and restated, made sure the gas cap was on tight, etc. but the light is still on (not flashing, just ON). The I figured that I'd try what made it go off to begin with again, this time monitoring all the gauges. I noticed that when the pedal is to the floor the boost gage is going WAY past 35. Keep in mind, even when I had the chip in, this truck NEVER saw past 27LBS of boost. All the truck has on it now is the 4" exhaust, and the intake. So, what do you think the problem is this time ??? The truck runs great, its just the light is on.
Any help would be great. Either way, it's going back to the dealer on Monday.
If the turbo is producing too mch boost, could be a few things, I would suspect the VGT control valve is holding the vanes too closed causing turbo overspeed and subsequent high boost.
Well, the truck is going in for service on Friday. It's wierd because this morning I started the truck, and the engine light went off, and has not come back on since. However, I have not tried "putting the pedal to the floor" again, because I'm afraid that will set the light off again. But then again, they said if the light is not lit, it will not throw out any codes to their computers. So, maybe on Thursday I should make the light go off again for them.
I also noticed that the turbo whistle is a much higher pitch than before, and is even noticable at highway speeds, where as before on the highway all I could hear was the rummble.
Oh well, I'll tell them to check the VGT actuator though.
Well, I got back from the dealer a few days ago, and they basically said that due to the work they did (replacing the ICP pump) that it is normal for the Check Engine light to go off right after they are done servicing it (as long is the light does not stay on for days). Since the light went off the next day after going on, and has not gone on since, they said to not worry about it. As for the boost it seems normal now (Knock on Wood) and I just put my 135HP Instigator chip back in, and the truck finally is back to normal, and SUPER FAST again (again, knock on wood lol).
The CEL must have been from something besides "overboost", as there is no overboost code within the 6.0 computer (unlike the 7.3). Any idea what the actual code number is?
My bet is that it was something fueling related- there is simply not enough fuel present, when everything is functioning properly with a stock tune, to generate enough load to reach this kind of boost level- you cannot just "raise" the boost- the boost is raised via fueling (and the appropriate VGT position to correspond with that level of fueling).
Psd, My 03 did the identical thing last weekend coming back from texas with about 10k in tow behind it. I was alright till I go into the hills thru missouri whenever i got over half throttle it would bring the boost guage all the way around and even hit the peg on zero if I floored it. It had no power when i was doing this also (way too much boost for the amount of fuel) I have an autometer phantom and where it was going was looking like 45 to 50lbs.... Hopefully I will forget about these problems when I pick up my 05 tomorrow and drop the 03` off for good...
They claimed that there was no codes to be read. The CEL only went on that one time like 2 weeks ago when I got it back from them. Stayed on one day, and then went off, and hasnt come back on since. Now that the chip is back in, the boost is higher (still pegging the gauge, but it takes a few seconds to get into the 30ish range, it just doesn't "fly" right up to 30+ and there is TONS of power at that high of boost range. SO for now, I'm living with it, and presuming that there is no problem. It is nice to have a truck that started again, with all the Mod.'s I had on it before (knock on wood). I've had it in the 135HP mode for about 1/2 a day so far, and I am generally easy on the go pedal.
