Question replaced ICP sensor!

I own a early 03 6.0, I bought it used with 12,000 miles on it. It now has 21,000 problem free miles, but I just found out my truck had a replaced ICP sensor, does this mean my truck might have problems to come, or already had motor damage, it sounds a little different at idle than other 6.0's. but the truck runs great. Am I worrying over nothing? clean carfax report.

Replaced ICP sensor is nothing- this is not a sign of any kind of engine failure or problems whatsoever. These are common parts to fail, and do nothing more than assist the computer in calculating commanded and delievered fuel quantities to the engine.

This is, IMO, a non-issue.

On an early '03 6.0 I would be more concerned if it *hadn't* had the ICP sensor replaced. The early ones had a problem in the cold where the internal seals would leak and oil would ruin the guts. The original part number ended in -AA, before it was all over they were up to -EA, so it took them a few tries to get it right... and once they did, all was well. I got mine replaced the instant the program became official (March-ish of 2003) and ended up with a -DA sensor. The fact that yours was replaced simply means that the original owner and/or his dealer were paying attention to maintenance concerns, which is a great thing.

What does "ICP" stand for? How do you know if you have a bad one? (does the check engine light come on/does it store a code?). Also, where is it located? I have an early 03 (Jan 03). 52K miles, very few problems...still argueing with the dealer over declining fuel economy & power issues.

ICP = Injection Control Pressure

On my truck it never threw a code (well, it didn't turn on the check engine light anyway) but it would idle all kinds of wacky ways, especially when it was really cold out. Of course even brand new 6.0s have been known to idle all kinds of wacky ways, especially when cold out, so the ICP is just one of many potential causes for that.

Really I think the best approach in your case would be to have the dealer (or some kind soul here) to run your VIN in OASIS and see if it has ever had the ICP sensor changed. On a January '03 build truck, if the ICP sensor has never been changed, then you have one of the bad ones. I don't know if there was a time limit to that program to upgrade them, but even if there was I think you could make a case that they should replace it anyway. If it fails for sure they would replace it under the 100K warranty, and since they were known to be of a bad design there's a good chance it has failed and could be causing some of your problems... even if they can't pin it down 100% with some code or test.

It's realy really hard to get to on the '03 engines, your dealer's mechanic isn't going to be a happy camper to have to change it... but I'm sure he's done dozens or hundreds by now and has gotten better at it. My guy ended up cutting off a wrench handle to make it easier to get at it from below. It just became his ICP sensor wrench.
