For the last little while we've had a 'clunk' sort of noise coming from the steering wheel on our 92 Explorer XLT. Last night the horn started to go off by itself when driving.
Today I took off the middle part of the steering wheel and found a large shiny metallic object loose (I guess it touched something it shouldn't have and the horn went off). It looks like it was held on with 3 rubber bushings so it would be just kind of floating on them if it was still connected, and it's positioned just lower than the centre of the wheel.
Does anyone know what this part is for, I'm thinking of just using some sort of bonding agent to bond the bottom of the rubber bushings onto the mount that they used to be connected to - or if I take it out completely, what effect will this have?
I think you've got it pretty well figured out. I remember reading directions for a fix like this on another website that others in this forum frequently referred to that got removed from a university server. I know someone on this forum succeeded in restoring a portion of that site, but I wouldn't know if the fix for this survived.
As I recall, they simply removed the offending part and possible lubed the remaining squeeking component. hope this helps.
My '92 did the same thing. That part is a steering wheel balance/weight. Haven't quite identified its purpose (other than to come loose and make clunks). Just pull it out (that's what I did) and pretend it never existed.
