Water anybody?

I have 95 F150 with the great inline six. It runs really strong, gets great gasmilage and all. However, when I park it and open the hood after having driven it for a while you can clearly smell burnt coolant. The truck doesn't use any coolant and there is no water/ AF in the oil. About a 1/2 inch below the spark plug holes there is a greasey film/residue. Could this be from the water pump leaking? How long can I nurse this along? I am at school so I can't get under there and I don't have much time/money to pay to get it fixed.

Anybody at all? I need to know what is going on here. I went to check the wheep hole under the pump snout and it appears to be dry. However I felt something greasey and kinda like a piece of gasket by the crankshaft damper. Any ideas?

Sounds more like oil than coolant.

I know my water pump needs replacing, I ran the truck and then checked after I parked, it was coming out. However what I felt before is either the front main seal or the timing cover gasket.

Well you can always do the taste test...if its sweet, coolant...if it tastes like dinosaur crap, oil. Changing the water pump isn't that hard...but get a Haynes manual if you don't have one...good tips there. If you do the pump, might consider doing the hoses, and thermostat at the same time while your in there. The fluid/greasy stuff your finding could be drippage from the pump blowing back there, if your finding it below and behind the water pump.

I find with my '91, if I top off the coolant overflow tank so much as a smidge over the full line, the pressure gets snarky, blows the extra coolant out the top of the tank, and it runs warm. Once the level is good, the temperature goes back to the cool range, and I don't blow any extra coolant out. Weirdest thing ever. It took me a while to figure out the pattern, too.

Oily stuff by your plugs tho... It could be blow-back. Have you pulled the plugs to see how they themselves look?

That would be some amazing blow-by. Since all my plugs are torqued to spec and they are all prefectly fine. I am talking about a 1/2" down from the plugs on the side of the block. My overflow tank is about 1/4" under the full line, never had any issues with it. I was planning on doing the upper and lower rad hoses while I was in there. I had a new thermostat in there when I replaced the radiator a while back.
