I saw an ad. in a magazine (tried finding it, went with trash) anyway. It injected air and LP gas into the mole hole. had a striker on the end. You touch it off in the hole and KABAM no more moles. No polution or moles. No poisons. etc. We have only a few moles and the dog gets them. So we didn't need this.
I remember seeing a home made trap in Farm Show Magazine. If you have never seen this publication, you should check it out. It is just full of home made equipment and contraptions mostly done in the spirit of "Necessity is the mother of invention". Some pretty wacky home built stuff in there.
Anyway, a guy built a home made mole trap along the lines of the spear type traps commonly used. You position it above an active tunnel and set it. The ONLY difference is that instead of spears/spikes, it used an inverted 12 guage shotgun!! I am sure it was highly effective, but you sure wouldn't want to use something like that anywhere but in the most remote of areas with no children or pets within about a 3 mile radius!
Had to admire the guys inventiveness, though!
Cats work great.
This what I did for moles. use a gopher trap. We dig into their tunnels and widen it to lay the trap in it. The trapp would be set below the level of the tunnel. Ligtly sprinkle dirt over the trap til covered. Fit a box over the trap and tunnel and then pile dirt around the box so no light would get in. Usually every morning we have a mole and soon after a week or so we had no more moles.
I know when I moved to my acreage 6 years ago I was about to do this for it was well populated. I had 2 cats and they soon took vare of them.
Check out "Milky spore" on the net. It is an expensive and proven method of killing certain grubs in the lawn, your pets will be OK since it has nothing to do with poison. It lasts for years and years after the initial treatment, which may make it worthwhile for some homeowners. Of course this may not get rid of the moles but it sure helps kill part of the mole food supply. My sister has used it and finds less problems with japanese beetles on her roses.
Nothing like a good cat, my guy was outside most of the day and killed every mole for a 100 yard radius. The cat died, and now I have seen holes in the yard for the first time in five years.
found the article on getting rid of moles and woodchucks etc. go to www.rodenator.com looks like for commercial use. says 2 people can clear about 25 acres a day. WOW.
