I have been to Steves site many times in fact its where I first found out about ensuring TC lock up. I sent him an e-mail asking how to locate the TC lock up circuit I am posting his reply below:
Unfortunately I have only posted the mod on my site I did not do the jake
brake myself.
Post this question to the board
BAZ...
so once again how do I find the TC lock up circuit?
Yep, it's the purple wire w/ yellow tracer, coming from the right side of the transmission. Splice into that wire to a switch, then to a ground. You can also have an LED hooked up so you can see whenever your TC is locking up. Here's a link of how I did mine. They say to splice into it by the plug, but I followed the wire to the front side of the cab because I couldnt' get to the plug with the heat shield from the exhaust being right there, it also resulted in less wire being strung out.
I was a little confused when I first started reading about the exhaust brake. I understand the priciple, I had an Izuzu 2 ton dump truck (with the 7.8 I believe) straight 6. It had an exhaust brake you could turn on or off. My '97 PSD acts the same way, when I let off the throttle it starts slowing way down, you can really feel it, especailly without a load. Sometimes I barely have to apply the brakes until I'm almost at a stop. I was thinking this is how all PSD's are set up, but begging to think whoever had the truck before put this setup on it. Any thoughts?
OK let me be sury I have this straight all you have to do is ground the P/Y wire in the tranny bundle to lock up the TC.
I figred you would have to supply power to it evidently I was wrong.
I am just asking cause I dont want to torch the PCM
By my diagram you would put power to it. The #1 shift, #2 shift, converter clutch and the coast clutch are all grounded together with the red wire.
Check the P/Y for power when running. If no power tap into it and run the wire inside to a small bulb, ground as needed. The bulb should light when the converter locks.

Check the P/Y with a bulb as stated before. If it has constant power you would ground it, if not you would put power to it with the rectifier diode. I have not done this, my truck is a 6spd.
OK guys, who is correct here on the T/C lock-up.on the P/Y wire do we need 12v or do we ground, big difference???????Thanks
You take it to a ground! If you use an LED to tell you when your T/C is locking up, that is when you need 12v, to power the LED. Otherwise tap into the P/Y wire to a switch, then to a ground, as simple as that.
OK guys I just finished my convertor lock up switch,Tapped in to P/Y wire at grey plug under master cyl.to sw.and from sw. to ground---- works great, thanks for everybodys input.Next I am going to tackle the ehx.brake mod.,not tonight but at a later date,Thanks again folks.
