Cool 00 Help.. Broke off the overdrive button plastic housing on the gear shifter

I'll admit I was pounding/hitting the gear shifter with my hand after being cut off and opps crakcked the plastic end on the gear shifter. 3 days later the whole plastic housing holding the overdrive button is off. I've spend a little time looking at it. There are 3 wires that ripped off the over drive button hanging fro the gear shifter. Anyone have any idea what I have to do to fix this? Do I need the take of the gear shifter? Some starting information from anyone would be nice.

Thanks,

Mark

I had a similiar situation on my 2001- there is sort of a ring on top that hold the button inside of the shifter (the button is acutally a resistor that has a small light in it which lights the off sign). Previous owner snapped the ring, and it kept falling off - annoying as hell. I was able to buy the plastic ring part at the dealer for around 5 bucks, and put the old button back inside snapped new ring on top and problem solved here.

Though when you say wires hanging out do u mean u bent the wires on the button itself or the wires down in the socket that the button goes into? As long as can make the socket function, and still have the button undamaged, all you would be needing is the cheapo ring, I would hope.

No it's a little worse than that. The entire plastic part of the shifter is broken off. The last 2.5 inches. The wires have been ripped out of the resistor. I think i am in for a little work.

Well whoever cut you off must have really made you mad...
At this point, you could 1)try to superglue or epoxy what u have back together so that you have a working socket and go from there or 2) go to the parts counter at the dealer find someone helpful, they can look at the parts diagrams for you and at least give free advice...

Sorry for the thread resurection but...Seems this has come up a few times with no solid solution. So...Thought I should share my findings.

My 99' Expedition has a broken lever as well. Right at the end of the lever (Plastic %^&*%)...Don't know how it broke but it seems to be very uncommon so it makes me wonder what the hell happened...

ANYWAYS...I found the parts needed to fix the problem.

Simply go to FORD Parts dot com and use the COLLISION manual. Below is how FORD describes the part. None of the invoice info. gives part numbers for some reason...It was only $40 for the part. I ordered the end cap as well which is also listed below.

Collision Catalog - 1999 - Ford - Expedition
Steering column, Housing and components, Gearshift lever, Gearshift lever - Transmission shift tube - Transmission shift tube

Good deal.

FWIW, NONE of the online Fords parts dealers that use the same common parts catalog (Trademotion) provide the part number to the browser.

Your local dealer will give you the part number if you need it.

Yea...My free time to hit up the stealership parts counter is rare so I have to get done what I can from a computer terminal. Still seems kinda BS that they don't list an actual part number on the invoice though.

Smile Small Plastic Ring - Part Number??

Hi diamkirk2001,
You wouldn't happen to have the part number for that small ring handy would you. I bought my truck used without one and needed to replace it for about three years... Never bothered to look for the part because I presumed the whole assembly needed to be replaced.
Thanks for the post. I've been inspired!

13yrs later....

My wife broke off the little ring/bezel at the end of the gear selector.

I found the parts diagram, and it's #3 in the diagram.
I go down in the parts list... 1, 2, 4, 5... UGH! Where's #3???

Typical.

Which landed me here.

I ordered a
F2UZ-7A214-CA F2UZ-7A214-CA
from Ama (I mean... Ama said it would fit. LOL!).
But low and behold, the hole in the bezel/trim ring for the OD button is too small and didn't fit.

Anyone have the proper part number?? I've got an '05 Excursion.
