I just bought a used 2000 E350 with a 7.3l engine in it. Am I supposed to have an overdrive button somewhere? The **** on the gear shifter has broken off and I didnt think to ask the seller if there was anything besides a **** attached (like a **** with a button). There are no wires visible.
I would like to know if all 2000 e350's came with overdrive and How would I go about finding out?
Any help will be beneficial... if the OD has no button, does it mean that it is on by default and is functioning and just cannot be switched on or off since I dont have a button anymore? When you start up your machines is the OD always in "on" position and you need to turn it OFF if you dont need it. My Lincoln MarkVIII was like that. How would I know if it is on? I have a gear selector that shows P R N D 2 1.
Thanks again to all who reply...

I believe the van has the same tranny and overdrive button the trucks do. When you look down inside the broken **** on the shifter do you see the little holes the OD button used to plug in to? An easy way to tell would be to pull the plastic steering column cover off and see if there are wires coming out of the gear shift lever.

I will check first thing in the morning and report back.
However, does your truck start up with the overdrive on? You need to manually turn it off in city driving or if you dont need it, each time you start the vehicle??
The van does indeed have the OD button on the end of the shift lever. The default for overdrive to "on" until you push the button. The OD is canceled when you bush the button again or shut off the motor.

You do not need to turn off the OD, pretty much ever. If you are towing a heavey load, and hanging around say 1500 RPM 9 just a guess ) you may find the truck hunting on slight inclines. This would be when you would want the OD off. If you can hold up a bit on the fix, Sounds like our Parts supplier might be back on line here soon..Check with him and see what he might be able to do for you..
This normally works, although I hear he is busy right now, but we shall try.. Ohh Edddd
I am refereing to FTE Parts Guy in case you were wondering
Thanks guys... If I hardly ever need to get it out of overdrive and it defaults to "on" each time I start up the van, I am in good shape and when I have to pay attention to other things in the area, I can have this fixed or do it myself if it is not too difficult.
Until recently, I had a MarkVIII and I it would put me in OD at 40 MPH and when the car had to slow down due to traffic or whatever, the gear would slam from 4th to 2nd at times. It was pretty smooth but I didnt like it too much. I would turn off the OD when I was in city traffic to avoid this and it seemed to work out better.
When I bought the Van, I didnt think I had this luxury.
I took the beast out and drove around a bit yesterday and found that the vehicle resets the OD to "on" as I was told. The only time I would need a button would be to get the van out of OD which is seldom. I counted the gear changes... the change fron 3rd to 4th came at around 50-55 MPH. I am assuming that the 4th gear is the OD and it is working.
Thanks for sharing know-how and experience... I am really glad I found this community.<!-- / message -->
You are welcome!!!
You can still control the overdrive by steping down on the throttle to down shift. Just make sure you get a good grip on the steerin wheel and try not to Smile when the truck takes off like a "Wet Cat".

You may want to get a O.D. light/switch because it also is acts as a check tranny light. Mine was broke and missing when I bought my truck to, I went to the junkyard and found a replacement, it was an easy fix. the wiring scheme is as follows:
Purple/Brown = 1
Light Blue/Tan = 2
Green/White = 3
