yes you need relays cause the stock wiring is either 18 or 16 gauge and runs from batt to switch to dimmer to headlights. the two 90w bulbs pull 12.5 amps @14.4v the stock alt (65a) can only put out 12v at hot idle, in gear, lights on low, with brake lights but they are not much dimmer though.
these are the lights i got: ebay # 7952914872
Oh heck, I changed that crappy stock alt (55amp on mine) out years ago. Got a 130amp on there now, so I am not at all worried about that. But yes, the wiring is small in here and I will prob get relays for them.
Those are some sweet looking lights you have on there. They come with the 60/55w bulbs. The stock bulbs on the lights I have are 55 watts? What is the wattage of the hi-beams?
the highs on the stock ones can only be around 5-10 more watts than the low.
i would not go with the 55/60w bulbs, they will not be much brighter than stock, and new cars today are really bright so step up the wattage and you wont complain, although you could try the 55/60 and then change them to higher ones.
mine are the white 90/100w
Thanks guys, that article is great. I will go that route!
I did it, and you will be very happy with the results!!!!!!!
The only problems I have encountered is blowing a headlite every 6-8 months or so, ( I attribute this to the higher voltage at the bulb..?) so I carry a spare with me. This mod even makes your stock halogens almost blinding!!!
I think that I can buy the bulbs here locally. I will have to check on that, but if I got the light kit from you with the 55/60W bulbs, I could use them for a while and get brighter ones later. Plus, if after adding the relays it is as bright as everyone says, then I might now want anything much brighter. I mainly don't like that crappy yellow light (tungsten) the halogens put off. A brighter, white light would be really cool.
I did the relay setup on my '79. With a light meter I use at work I now have about 75% more foot candle output over stock wiring. With the lights on dim I can see better than I could with the stock wiring with them on bright. It is well worth $30 and a few hours of time. (that includes a new set of head lights from wally world)
I used to own an '89 Acura Integra that I did the H4 conversion to.
IMHO I thought the beam was far superior than the regular halogens and I liked the light spectrum better.Marginally brighter,
Yea, I can see how much brighter they are. I'm gonna try to find an electrical shop in my area and get a quote for wiring relays in my truck. I hate electrical stuff, so I really don't want to do it myself. But I have decided to definately do this. Thanks for the help.
i went with the sylvania hid conversion in my 76 diesel(yes diesel) crewcab 4x4 longbox. these are real hid's like the bmw's and audis. cost 500$$$$ and woth every penny of it. you would be amazed at what the road really looks like at night. they can run through the stock wiring as there is really no bulb, just a ballast. i choose relays anyway to get the most power to the system. with both headights on, the system is only pulliing 50 watts, less than one low beam bulb.
$500 is way too much for me. But that sounds like a sweet setup. They make some crystal/diamond cut headlight lamps that look similar to what I think you are talking about. These H4 bulbs would look great inside those.
