I have some hella's that are recatangular. I dont know much about them, as i got them out of another truck. They are not alot brighter, but the pattern of the beam is alot better.
LMC sells an aftermarket kit for both round and square lights. I'm not sure how they work, but when my truck gets back together, I'm gonna give them a shot. They're not that expensive, so it's worth the experiment for me.
I have Hella square headlights on my '78. 79driver is correct, the light is about the same but the pattern on the lens is superior, giving a much better dispersion. I got mine new off of ebay for about $30 each. Well worth the money. You can also aim the lights a little higher for high beam since the low beam pattern will disperse the light downward and outward and not into the eyes of the oncoming car.
look into the thread on using relays for headlight wiring in the tech section you have less resistance in the wiring and run seperate ground wires this helps some to brighten the lights at one time I used to run off road headlights instead of 55/60 watters they were 55/100 on high beam it was allways a bright sunny day but the will overpower a stock circuit breaker
Yup, always use relays to power the lights. That may make the improvement you want before you mess with high $$ bulbs. Check out the article "Whiter Whites, Brighter Brights" link in the tech article section:==>
i got 2 8x6 headlights with white 90/100w h4 bulbs for $40 shipped on ebay
i also put the relay system on.
they are way brighter than stock and my eyes almost take no time to adjust from oncoming new cars (not HID) back to mine compared to the dim stock ones.
i had relays on my stock headlight for a few months before i took them off cause i was having some problems, which i thought was because of the used relays i used, turned out to be the original dimmer switch. the stock wiring gave my lights around 12v instead of 14.4v, they were slightly brighter but not as powerful as my 90w bulbs cause stock bulbs are around 45-50 watts. i got the headlights that have a metal reflector instead of the high impact plastic and a glass lense, and not the diamond cut ones.
I guess what I need to know is if you think relays are necessary to run a 90w bulb. According to what others have said, I think that the stock wiring is too small to handle the amps pulled by a 90w bulb.
