Hello Everyone,
I have a question about my truck its a 1978 f150 and its got 302 engine in it. My question is about the oil pan it has 2 sumps and there apears to be a drain plug in each sump?? when I drain the oil am I suposed to drain each sump? Also it looks like it has 2 oil dipsticks. Should it have 2 dipsticks 1 up front and one towards the back? or is that unusual? Also about how many quarts of oil should it take to fill it up?
I agree with what was just posted. Also, not to hijack this thread, but what would be a good replacement for the classic early 90's rusted oil pan? Go to Ford or autozone type parts house? I know the old Fords were too thin.
aurgathor,
Yes it has an automatic transmision but if your thinking I was looking at the transmission dipstick I wasnt. I just recently bought the truck and today was the first nice day we have had around where I live so I decided to change the oil and I found 2 drain plugs on the oil pan so I drained the rear sump but it only had about 3 and 1/2 quarts of oil in it so im just wondering do I need to drain the front sump to I would have just took the plug out and tested my theory but I couldnt get a wrench to it because of its location. Also the front dipstick is broken and half of it is stuck in the tube so mabey the dipstick that is toward the back of the engine was an add on when the old one broke? But im not sure. I hope somone can figure this out.
Sounds like someone swapped a Mustang or Crown Vic 302 into your truck, and used the truck timing cover on the front of the engine. Either that or they just swapped the Mustang/Crown Vic oilpan onto it. Does the rear dipstick go through the block or the side of the oilpan?
You should drain both sumps to do the oil change properly, and you'll need between 4.5 & 5.5 quarts to refill (verify with dipstick).
