351w oil dipstick question

I have a 351W that is going in my 54 F-100. I had to use the double sump pan for it to fit right. The original pan had the dipstick going through the block. This new pan has a hole in the side of it, that I would assume it's for the dipstick so you can read the rear sump. Now, what vehicle can I search scrap yards for that had the 351w with dual sump pan with dipstick in the pan?

351w oil dipstick question

not sure about what vehicles for you to look in, but my 85 351w's tube was bent went I bought the motor, so I ordered one from jegs...the application wasn't vehicle specific, just said for 351w with dipstick that screws into the pan...probably not much help here, just sharing my experience

351w oil dipstick question

Plug the hole and use the in the block dipstick. The hole you're talking about may also be for a low oil sensor, does it have a large nut and screw into the middle of the rear sump on the left side?

351w oil dipstick question

Well I looked on Ford Racing's site, and the 351w swap pan looks like the one I have. If I use the dipstick through the block, will it read correctly once I have 5 qrts of oil in it?

Here's a picture to explain what I'm talking about on the pan....Does anyone know what size plug I will need if I plug it?

351w oil dipstick question

Is the "in the block" dipstick you're talking about in the front? Cause I don't see one in the rear. If it is in the front, it's probably in the timing cover, not the block, and as such won't work with that rear sump pan. That IS a dipstick hole in that pan you showed. You can most likely get the dipstick tube and dipstick for that pan from your local Ford dealer. Thye cost will most likely be less than you want to spend in time and money hunting one down in a junkyard. I'd bet it won't run more than 20-30 bucks.

351w oil dipstick question

Ya sorry it goes through the timing cover, at the bottom. When I first got the motor it was a front sump pan. But that wasn't going to work with my Mustang II x-member. So I got this dual sump. I guess another question I have is, Will that front sump dipstick on this dual sump pan read correctly? If it will, then I will just get a plug for the rear hole.

No it won't work. I went thru the same process with the 302 in my 89 Ranger, it also requires a dual sump pan too . If for some reason the rear sump runs low, the front will always read full, because the pump pickup draws from the rear. Just get a dipstick and tube from your nearest Ford dealer and plug the front dipstick hole in the timing cover.

I think one for an 83 or so to a 96 F150 would also work, depending on just what it is you're putting that 351W into. What is that anyway?

Joners, Lokar makes what your looking for PN# ED-5005 it is a little pricey but is a quality piece (I use one, think I got it from Summit ). A bonus is because it is flexible clearing aftermarket headers is usually not a problem. As Adam stated above make sure you have the proper oil pickup for that pan.

Good Luck Skip_T

351w oil dipstick question

The early motors had a front sump pan with the stick going through the timming cover. The later ones had it at the side. You want to use the dip stick location for the pan you are using. Just plug the one you are not using.
