Cover for the Bed

I just purchased a King Ranch F-250 and am in the market for a bed cover. I've seen some that appear to be vinyl or other soft material and hope to get one that tilts up from the rear on gas shocks. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions on a good cover that lifts? Thanks.

i bought a pace edwards retractable. it is aluminum covered in vinyl, clamps on, and can be locked to secure items in the bed. only downside is that there is always a canister in the front of the bed.

they do leak some. it's not really bad, but they do leak around the edges, some at the front, and alot at the tailgate. i know the tailgate leak is probably an adjustment issue, but when it's closer, the gate won't shut if the cover is closed.

also, i sat on the canister and it got out of alignment and made the cover hard to close. i didn't realize that was the problem for a few weeks. after a minor 5 min adjustment, everything was back to normal.

it iced over once, but i bumped it with my hand and it opened.

i like that it is secure and can lock at different places. i like the light underneath. i like that the pull strap is accessible from outside the truck.

i wish is opened and closed with a little less effort.

i bought the explorer rails with mine and made a headache rack to fit in the channels. they sell a ladder rack, but it seemed a little pricey.
i got mine at truck-bed-covers.com

let me know if you have any other questions.

I went with a fiberglass lid on my 250SD. The thing is almost bullet proof and watertight for all but a hurricane. Even then, it only seeps in through the piano hinge a little. I installed handrails and on ocation use the deck to haul 10-12 bails of hay when we need extra for a trip. It came with color matched gelcoat so it looks like it belongs and not like an afterthought add-on. It is made by Century, (like the boat.) The other I considered was made by A.R.E. and cost a little more. Both have the bar locks and not the weaker cable system.

i got a extang standard for mine they have always been ok by me, roll up out of the way, yes they have draw backs but after dropping 34k the $250.00 was enough money for now.

I have the Extang full tilt tonneau (soft) and love it. It comes with the gas charged shocks and comes off in seconds, or it can be rolled as well. The only drawback is security that you get from a hard tonneau, but I don't keep anything worth stealing in the back of my truck. I don't have any leaking issues, but I did spend some time adjusting it when I installed it. I paid $329 for it and installation took about 2 hours.

I am actually looking to sell it because I want to put a leer cap on the back so if anyone is interested in a 6 week old extang full tilt tonneau for a shortbed let me know.

I have the "Retrax" retractable. Metal slats and it locks (so does my tailgate). I have been more than happy with it. When I pull the 5th. whl. I do not have to remove it. Truck bed is "Rhino" Lined. Something else I would not be without. Mine leaks a little at the rear where it comes against the tailgate. It has been through rain, snow (lots) and ice and still works fine.

I have the RETRAX on my King Ranch dually. Mine stays very dry inside despite living in a heavy rain climate (Oregon).

With the rear tailgate seal all the way up, I have rarely had more then a couple of tablespoons of water inside.

I bought my RETRAX originally for my 01 F-250 PSD. I took it with me when I bought the 04. Looks as good today (and works just as good) as the day I bought it. I have a couple of pics in my gallery, I believe.

I really like the undercover, hardcover that lifts on gas shocks, not practicle if you haul things that are taller than the bed though.
