if you do occasional wheeling or just need a winch to tug you out of a soft spot or something they would be fine. i owned a generic brand Ramsey (made by Chicago Electric from Harbor Freight) and they are horrible. i went through 2 of them in less than a year. i did work them hard though. i would sink my trail rig and then winch it all the way out. i did use a ****** block but it is still a lot of stress for one of these winches. the biggest problem is the metal that the casing is made of. it is very cheap pot metal and i broke the case almost instantly the first time i used it. my suggestion is to go out and buy 100' of AmSteel blue or other winch rope. they are a lot lighter and the rope makes winchin much easier.. hell it helped my second Ramsey knock off last twice as long. you'd be surpriused how much weight i reduced by going with a rope and not the metal cable

just my humble opinion though!

Winches are like condoms, you don't want to spend money on the cheapest ones you can find because when they fail you can be in a world of hurt. I've found going cheap usually is more expensive in the long run. Save your pennies and buy a real winch.

Look for a well used warn like the upright (the 8276'ers), then go through the winch and replace any worn parts you can and you should be good to go. This is what my dad did, but he bought a used warn M8000 (good shape, well used though) he had the shop where he got it from (warn dealer and fixer place) an additional 75 bucks, so all he had to do was bolt it on the mounting plate he made (for his trailer, the plate works like a reciever hitch so he can put it inside when not using it). I think the final cost ended up being 500-600 bucks canadian (roughly 400 bucks american), and the winch is like brand new and it will serve our needs perfect for loading cars and such on the trailer, and the every odd farm truck stuck out in the pasture (i made an adapter to use it in a 2" recieve hitch for it). If i were you this is what i would do.

I'm not even going to try to touch this one up; although the possibilities are about limitless (for the sick and twisted)

He's right though. Sure you can buy "all metal" Superwinch hubs. Why? You'll go through 100 sets under the same circumstances as a better (more expensive) brand. You get what you pay for.

thanks everybody i think i might save for the warn or keep looking on ebay. i do have a chance to get a pto for my 205 but i am unsure if i want all the excess weight of a pto winch. also the overhang on the front would probably be horribal anyway thanks. and if any one in the st louis or south central illinois has a winch for sale let me know.

that's exactly what i did... one of my friends had an 8274 and he thought it was the Warn Classic 8K. i took it off his hands on the spot for $80! i went through it and someone had already replaced all the worn parts so it was like brand new!

i think he has another, i will check for ya

Guess what the wife just got me for christmas?! Anyways were did you get your winch rope and how much was it? Also do you have any ideas on what caused them to break or what I should avoid? (other than getting stuck!) I guess I ought to check into if I can still get that extended warranty!!

sorry for the news jughead...maybe you will have much better luck than I did. what you could do is bolt that one on the trailer and tell your wife you don't want a winch just yet....you are looking for just the right one!

here's a basic price list for those who don't wanna follow the link:

5/16" x 80', 13,700lb winch rope, $110
5/16" x 90', 13,700lb winch rope, $121
5/16" x 100', 13,700lb winch rope, $139
5/16" x 125', 13,700lb winch rope, $172
5/16" x 135', 13,700lb winch rope, $182
5/16" x 150', 13,700lb winch rope, $198

3/8" x 80', 20,400lb winch rope, $150
3/8" x 90', 20,400lb winch rope, $172
3/8" x 100', 20,400lb winch rope, $187
3/8" x 105', 20,400lb winch rope, $198
3/8" x 110', 20,400lb winch rope, $209
3/8" x 125', 20,400lb winch rope, $231
3/8" x 150', 20,400lb winch rope, $275
7/16" x 75', 23,925lb winch rope, $160
7/16" x 85', 23,925lb winch rope, $182
7/16" x 90', 23,925lb winch rope, $193
7/16" x 100', 23,925lb winch rope, $209
7/16" x 125', 23,925lb winch rope, $264
7/16" x 150', 23,925lb winch rope, $314

the great thing is if your winch calls for 100' of 5/16" you can substitute it for something bigger and stronger (like 7/16 x 75') you just can't get quite as much.

i recommend www.RockStomper.com but you can find rope just about anywhere these days.

in fact while i am thinking about it a couple of weeks ago i was in the back clearing out some of our land after a bad storm and was hauling off cut up wood with my 4x4 Kubota tracotr. well i kept getting deeper and deeper in the mud until finally i got stuck... actually i sunk the front end, couldn't see the front tires. i pulled my trail rig down in the woods (i didn'thave 4x4 yet so i was nervous) backed up to a tree. i chained the rear bumper to the tree and ran my winch line (single line no ****** blocks) and pulled the tractor out. winch didn't heitate and rope didn't sweat it. i know it's hard to imagaine on the interent but a 4x4 tractor is pretty heavy to begin with, you add some sloppy sticky mud and it quickly becomes twice as heavy. i love that damn winch rope, I will never go back to cable!
