96 Explorer heater core replacement

I have a 96 Explorer XLT with the V8. The heater core is blown and must be replaced. I have done this on my 95 F350 and it was no big deal, but I know it can be a dismantle job on some vehicles. Can anybody let me know what I am in for? Thanks, RL

I think the whole dash has to come out. When I replaced my blend door plenum, I also replaced the heater core, since I was that far into it. And the heater core is in that plenum, which is the last thing to come out. This involves removing the steering wheel and column, air bags and air conditioning housing, along with unhooking a bunch of wires.

A big thank you to Mvoeller2 for the info. For all you lookie-loos, Autozone's website has resources to almost any auto technical manual you may need. (I am constantly amazed at what you can find on the internet). DANG!!! they don't make changing this thing very easy.
