Spray some WD-40 on the door latch and into the door through the door handle and operate the door handle as you do it. The swithc of rhe door lights sticks. Very commn problem on Ranger pick-up and have seen it occasionally on the Explorer forum. I have presonally experienced the problem on my daughter's 97 Raner nut have never had the problem on my 96 Explorer. This does the trick 75% of the time. If this doesn't fix it, you may want to try replacing the swicth in the door handle. New switch is between $10 - & $20 from Ford. Kind of a pain the first time you replace it but gets easier every time because of the experience gained.

Good Luck.

You have an open electrical loop somewhere.........i would try Texans' advice first... then start taking apart all the switches to see if it goes off.....doors have to be closed when you disconnect switch you want to recreate the environment that the light is staying on then remove a part of the loop from it to check it that is it. If you remove the switch from loop and its still on....keep checking until light goes out. and replace that switch. Long process. Im sure there has got to be an easier way? Someone else might be able to make it quicker.
